Dishwasher by Pete Jordan

Pete Jordan, author of Dishwasher, will read selections from his book, talk about eating restaurant leftovers, discuss and show the practical joke he and a friend played on David Letterman, and screen an unauthorized 'Dishwasher Pete' film.

Pete was a college drop-out, a self-proclaimed layabout, and was always looking for free grub or a place to crash, but had the desire to travel and explore. As a result, he became a man with a mission – to professionally wash dishes in all 50 states. After chronicling some of his experiences in his self-published ‘zine called "Dishwasher" (which erupted into a cult following of 10,000 people), contributing to public radio’s "This American Life", and being approached by countless publishers, Jordan finally decided to immortalize his outrageous journey through countless kitchens across America.

“For twelve years, I was the most prolific dishlicker of them all. From 1989 to 2001, I dished my way around the country, unwittingly searching for direction. From a bagel joint in New Mexico to a Mexican joint in Brooklyn, from a dinner train in Rhode Island to the Lawrence Welk Resort in Branson, Missouri, and from an upper-crust ladies’ club to a crusty hippie commune—I washed the nation’s dishes.”

Part adventure, part parody, and part miraculous journey of self-discovery, it is the unforgettable account of Jordan’s transformation from itinerant seeker into 'Dishwasher Pete' unlikely folk hero, writer, publisher of his own cult zine, and the ultimate professional dish dog and how he gave it all up for love.

“Jordan, sometimes known as ‘Dishwasher Pete,’ serves up one of the most entertaining memoirs to appear in quite a while...The book’s exploration of the dishwashing subculture is fascinating…” --Booklist

“Sprinkled with fascinating dish-washing history…Dishwasher’s appeal is in Jordan’s triumph, proving that following your heart even into a sink full of scalding water isn’t such a bad idea.” --Penthouse

“Jordan’s new book, "Dishwasher", is not just a celebration of his triumph, and it’s not just a collection of zine excerpts. It’s the back story, the long shot, and the companion to his other writings, and it’s just as funny, just as proudly lazy, and just as inspiring as those photocopied pamphlets so many of us hoard.” --San Francisco Weekly
